I totally relate to this story. I've had it happen with monks and warriors when they are in the middle of a bunch of enemies. I'm not going squeeze myself between a swarm of level 24 enemies, just to touch you to give you energy.
I just created a list of a ton of tips for energy management. It's intention was to help the minion master who posted earlier in this forum, but I realize most of it could help any necromancer. Should I post it here?

One thing to keep in mind, 90% of the time as a MM you're gonna be running with another Necro, SF you run with an SS necro, tombs with orders (Generally),MF builds in Pvp...duh Bipper, so unless you're going in some team with no one else to Br/Bip/CoP/whatever to help with management OOB is totally non essential and you're much better off using a skill that will help you raise those minions faster like Glyph of Renewal (N/E) or Skils to keep your minions, yourself, and your party alive longer like Heal area (N/Mo) which is doubly usefull for offsetting the sacrifice from veratas. Those builds are common because they're proven, solid builds, you -CAN- use OOB, but if you feel the -NEED- to, you really just need alot more practice playing a MM, SR and party support plenty of energy management, and your job after all is to get that army up as fast as possible and keep em alive as long as possible, not be screwing around slitting your wrists for more energy Additionally with factions coming out, alot of MMs may want that elite for those nice Flesh golems that leave exploitable corpses which will make N/MO even more of a mainstream combo for MM

well, MM is ok, I just find the upkeep to be a bit annoying. Also, in big things like SF, my monk doesnt like healing the MM over an over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over just because he/she has to sac every 5 seconds.
Now, although I dont have much exp. with MM, I enjoy the SS alot. Not only do you play a huge part in any group, its also a good way to get rich off a cheap build, as seen in 2 man UW builds. And seeing 15 37's over a huge mob is always fun...

Definatly agree there, SS is my main build 2.7mil xp on my necro and 99% of it from UW/Tombs/SF hehe. its nice because 1. You're a major damage dealer seeing 41x20 popup every second which you're chillin in the back 2. bloodritualing everyone whithout having to be healed 3. interupting mobs that need it and 4. some nice utiliy spells that are very effective although seldom recognized 5. decent self heal, its just plain fun.

I spent a lot of time MM in SF back in the days when it was a good way to profit and tried a LOT of MM builds. I actually found that you can MM just as well without OoB and can use that spot for Tainted Flesh which works well to support before your army starts rolling. I believe for maximum army size, switching between fiends and horrors works well with the emphasis on fiends of course. Using this tactic also results in less saccing which is a lot easier on the monk.
